Chakras are energy centers within the body that come from Eastern traditions. They are both universal and not universal at the same time.
By this, I mean their metaphorical or symbolic meaning is universal, while their physical or rather metaphysical (spiritual) reality is not. Each of the chakras both represent a specific kind of energy such as sexual or mental energies, but they also represent opening yourself up to being fully yourself.
Fully yourself is enlightenment in a sense, as it is not only knowing yourself, but also acting as yourself. In our daily lives, we often avoid or hide from the reality of us, as it is not only scary to be yourself all the time, but it is also not something everyone will appreciate.
In society today, it is more acceptable to place blame on external problems or people, rather than to take personal responsibility. Working with chakras will change that if you do so fairly often, as you are working directly with your own energy, and becoming aware of how that energy effects all parts of your life.
Yes, I'll actually get to describing how to work with them, but I want to give a sense of what they are, and how working with them can change your life. If you are not looking to be a better, more realized you, you should probably skip this and stick to spells.

Working with the Chakras:
Now, you can work with them through meditation, however, it is not necessary. I, myself, am one of those who has always worked with them indirectly. Indirectly working with the chakras simply requires that you become aware of certain things in your life, and that you change those things. Such as working on your public speaking and being open about your feelings will be working with your throat and heart chakras respectively.
Working with them through meditation is rather simple. Often the chakras are visualized as lotus flowers, wheels, or energy balls. These are then cleansed of negativity or dark spots and spun. In the case of lotus flowers, they can also bloom. By doing this, you are cleansing and opening them.
You can also "close" your chakras if you are having issues with them being open. By open and closed, I mean active and less active. The chakras are never fully closed or fully open truthfully, as the levels of them change constantly.
