That is from anime. Not real life. The show, called full metal Alchemy, was based loosely on the concept of Alchemy which was the medieval precursor to chemistry and physics. Modern day alchemists generally seek spiritual transformation. This, however, does not cause transformation of anything physical. Medieval alchemists were also never able to transmute metals or anything of that nature either.

As stated by AwakeTooLong, it is not possible to transform another metal, such as silver or lead, into gold by the means of magic.

It is, however, currently possible through scientific means to "create" gold through nuclear decay. It requires a nuclear reactor or a particle accelerator, and the production cost would be many times the current price of gold.

Yes they are. Fictional alchemy is very much done today by illusionists to create the effect of alchemy. But alchemy itself is not about transmutation or creation. That is just the tip of the spear. Alchemy mostly is to change yourself into someone better. That's why to master alchemy you can't look at the physical sides alone(transforming lead into gold), you HAVE to involve the spiritual side as well.
