I think I have fairies?

For a while now, I've known my house has some sort of spirits living in it. I have no clue if these are thoughtforms, spirits, or what. I've tried smudging, praying, even spellwork to purify the area but whatever it is, it's stubborn. Even my patron can only seem to hold them at bay for a short time, and that's Brigid, warrior goddess of the home.

I watched Spiderwick on Netflix (this isn't going to get fluffy, I promise) and when I was watching it, I felt this ease. I usually feel tense as heck at night because that's when I'm more aware of something in my house that might not like me, which would make sense given that I've tried nearly everything to kick it out.

So, is it possible I have fairies or elves living in my house and that's why they're so stubborn to leave? I'm home alone for a week with just my dog to keep me company and I'm scared of something jumping out of the shadows, and trust me, it's happened to a terrifyingly annoying degree. These spirits have driven me insane for years and I am at a point where I either want them out or to make peace with them so they'll leave me alone.

Since you think it might be one of the Fair Folk, perhaps look into household spirits? They're unfortunately rather easily offended, but doing things like leaving out offerings for them might help them feel as if they're being appreciated, though some offerings will be taken as offensive by them.

From my experiences and research, cream is generally appreciated by Fair Folk, but I googled it just to be sure.According to the article "Brownie" on Encyclopaedia Britannica, cream or bread are the offerings considered acceptable for the household spirits. Most of my readings suggest that one should leave the offerings on the hearth.

I hope that helps!

We do have a fire place, I could give it a shot. It's better than thinking every time I go to brush my teeth and I look back in the mirror it's not going to be my reflection (like something out of place or something that suddenly looks like something else only in a mirror, like a bottle looking like a disembodied hand). Easily offended spirits, now that sounds like what I've got. When I try to cleanse an area, it's like my anxiety skyrockets, like I know I just made someone seriously mad. And next thing I know I'm bolting upright from sleep because I heard an evil maniacal laugh in my ear.Nothing scarier than that.

Thanks for the tip!

Keep in mind that many consider Brownies to be a type of fae, and what you’ve described definitely sounds like fae to me, but yes, it does sound like you have some sort of fae or fae-like entities who have decided to claim your house/place where you live.

It might be best to make peace with them and learn to coexist as long as they are not causing you harm. If they do seek to cause you harm, seek someone (or learn how) to safely banish them. Also, once/if you’ve all started getting along, fae can be very mischievous, and hide things or pull what they view as harmless pranks or games and fun between you and them. Try to set some very well thought out ground rules for both you and them, and be very careful in your wording, and extremely specific—there is a reason why fae are known for twisting words.

Try not to anger them, and try not to get angry unless you have an excellent reason, because irate or slighted fae can be nasty or dangerous at times depending on what happened and the severity of it. Also, look up basic etiquette with the fae—you don’t want to become indebted to them just by accidently or ignorantly saying “thank you”, as that is, to them, you saying that you owe them for what they have done. The same goes for the word “sorry” and some other forms of traditional apologies. I have an entire 25+ stanza poem on the dangers of fae.

I'll be honest, I was hoping I was wrong about it being fae. I set out some honey and that seems to have quelled them. I'm surprised it hasn't attracted ants. Maybe it means the faeries have claimed it as their own.

Well, if it’s any conciliation, I work with the fae, as do others I know, and none of us regret it. The fae can be tricky at times, but once you get the hang of them and get used to their pranks and line of thought, they’re not so bad. Of course, good and bad are quite subjective when I comes to the fae—there are some exceptions, though, and you do not want to meet those expectations. But that aside, the fae it seems you have, do seem to be fairly mild if rather possessive of their new home/foothold in this world. My companion fae says (while yawning) that what you have some call “house fae”, and that as long as you all get along and follow the rules that you’ll draw up for everyone to follow with certain needed exceptions for any guests you might have or receive, there shouldn’t be any problems, just what they view as harmless pranks.

House fae would explain why Brigid would only be able to hold them off for a little while. She's goddess of the home and a Tuatha de Danann, who later turned into the Dion Sidhe (still doing research on that). Any books you would recommend on dealing with House Fae?

I cant say I have read many books on house fae...I certainly cant think of any titles that I know are good resources, however I do know of at least one tumblrblog writerwho I follow who has had a fae take a shine to her home and family. There are also several tumblrposts that talk about fae claiming houses, and those posts generally have good information, though of course, some information may differ from fae to fae, but most of it is very good for general use with house fae.

If you would like the blog title, I can PM it to youI dont know how they would feel about me posting it for everyone to see, as they and the fae they channel get vexed when people send hateful messages, and I know not everyone in the community approves of working with fae. Also, as I work with fae almost every day, I am always happy to help where I can with fae-related things.

I've only had a few encounters with faeires, and all I can say is don't upset them, they're stubborn but spiteful. I would make them a faerie garden, or leave stuff for them outside and make a deal with them. They're welcome to live in a specific area but not your house [hopefully you have a yard, leave a corner of the garden for them. Never go near it and let it grow wild, that's their space] I would also leave little offering for them like the above mentioned honey. I would try communicating with them [I've used pendulums in the past] and see what they want, if anything, and try to find a compromise. From my time living with fae it didn't take much to make them happy, we left the far end of the back yard alone for them, hung some wind chimes in the garden, and I would leave a dish of honey or cup of really sweet tea out for them occasionally. I never asked them for anything [outside of forgiving my one friend who annoyed them by repeatedly asking if they knew what her aura looked like even though everyone told her to stop] but on the other hand they never really did anything. I found out one night faeries lived near me and I went "did you want to live over there?" And that was it. I would leave them honey sometimes, whenever I was having tea I would leave them a cup, and when my coven was over they would join us in our celebrations. Be respectful, and just accept you'll have to deal with something to keep them happy [and from my experience it's not that much. Maybe a square foot of the yard at most, a teaspoon of honey once a week, couple sweet smelling flowers or wind chimes]
