Sam, there is no rush. Some people will settle with one deity or group of deities, while some others will adapt different ones over time, and some may follow a mixed spiritual tradition, or none at all.
I would suggest researching your interests, and what god(s) may catch your fancy. Learn the mythology around them, and see what you may or may not like.
Yes, research is important! You may want to stick to particular Gods or particular pantheons, but either is fine. For me, finding a God or Goddess was becoming interested in one and hearing their name repeat over and over inside my head. Then, all of the sudden, I would connect with them and start a conversation. I can't speak for everyone, but that's how it happens with me.
Oh, and here's a quick list of some pantheons to look into:
Kemetic Pantheon (Ancient Egyptian)
Norse Pantheon (Asartru)
Hellenistic (if only I could spell that word) or Greek Pantheon
There is one God and several spirits worshipped and acknowledged in Voodoo, but I've heard this religion is closed to all but a specific ethnic group. Still a very beautiful religion, though.

Do you mean find?
There's many ways to find a deity to work with, but you should ask them before calling on them for help. You can work with as many deities at one time as you feel you can but you need to be able to create a deep connection which can be difficult juggling 50 deities at once. Start with one. There's many ways you can meet them so be patient.
