Clarification: Spirit animals and familiars are not the same things. Spirit animals are a Native American totemism, while familiars are a more European line of thought. Familars are viewed to be a guiding force that is either attached toan animal present in one's life or one that has physically manifested into your reality, that is not to say one mightmaterialize before you. Spirit animals are seen as entities that guide one from a plane other than this one.

(Thanks to Moegami for the term "totemism")

Can a person have more than 1 spirit animal at the same time in their life as spirit guides? If so why?

ryder, that's like asking if you're only going to have one teacher in a lifetime.
It's highly unlikely that you will only have one. Some are better equipped to teach certain lessons than others.

Some people do believe one may have more than one spirit animal.

One claim is that a person has their main spirit animal, representative of certain aspects of themselves, and a "shadow" animal which represents the negative aspects of the person or major challenges the person will face in their personality.

Some people reduce an animal's symbol to a single aspect, or a small contingent of traits, and believe they have a different animal to represent each aspect or group of traits.

If you're wanting something more purist in terms of Native American belief, be careful to research which line of belief you are following. Some groups believe in an animal spirit guide, while some others may use the animal totem to represent the family group rather than being a guide. Still some other beliefs may discredit the validity of one's spirit totem unless the vision is attained in specific ritual processes. There are yet more variables and aspects as well.
