Familiars...

I have recently discovered a possible familiar for myself, and was wondering if familiars can only be cats?

Familiars are not limited to just cats. As far as I know, any animal can be a familiar.

They can be anything. Including spirits found or created.

There is a great deal of difference between an animal companion "familiar" and that which is purely rooted in the spiritual, in my opinion. Particularly if such is a created entity.

If I may be frank, most folks who have such an animal companion have a warm bond with a pet. This is not so different than any other experience one might have with a beloved animal, but the individual simply sees it as more than this. Sometimes there's a bit more to this but, well... to each their own.

Familiars and the like of the spiritual variety, including created servitors/homunculi/etc., are generally more in line with the traditional lore (despite the cat familiar being what is most commonly depicted), presenting bond between the magic practitioner and a being that work together within one's magical practice.

Familiar is short for familiar spirit, as in a spirit that you work with othent, it can also be a animal, a familiar is not something that you go aboat just oh I want one, but rather any spirit or creature that you involve in your mystical workings othent

first off, any animal/spirit (willing) could be a familiar, they are used to defend the caster and substitute energy for the caster, as well as their most common use of helping the caster and calming him/her when in meditation; how ever i don't think a pet would be a good choice for a familiar. if you use to much energy from it, it could seas to exist or be badly hurt, and if it tried protection you it could get harmed that way as well. i trust spirit familiars a tad more.

Hmm... The question is how to get one...
