Salamanders are a mythlogical creature of fire. They elemental creatures like gnomes and sylphs. Althought I don't know if the physical salamanders are mystical in anyway but all life is so I guess in my book they are.

The salamanders meaning "spirits of fire" came first, I think.

Then some lizard-like amphibians liked to nestle in damp logs in the fireplaces of medieval (or whatever era was in-between "the invention of the fireplace" and "the invention of taxonomy") cottages, and when people lit the fireplace, the amphibians would wake up and crawl out. So, people thought they came from the fires and called them salamanders.

As for magical creatures, I gave up trying to sort them out and just call them all "astral entities". :-P

There really is a long list of magical animals. Humans are part of that list for we are animals as well. For more info on this subject check out Spirits, Fairies, Leperechauns, and Goblins An Encyclopedia by Carol Rose.
