Hello everyone. Does anyone have any advice on how I can keep my 5 year old daughter out of my altar?

Small children are always attracted to things they don't understand. Teaching them to respect religious practices is paramount to their social education. This is something they should learn in the home. If it is possible, include them in the maintenance of the altar with instruction on why it is part of the home and what purpose it serves. Try to include them when you are setting up things and teach them what they can touch and when it is appropriate for them to do so. Guidance is the key and including them in small ways is an easier task than prohibition.

I agree with Engwald, try and include your child in some way so they understand. I don't have kids, but I've got a cat. Keep it out of reach, and when accidents happen, kindly explain why what she did wasn't okay [don't eat the salmon offering, it's for my Goddess] and then ask her to apologize [which would be easier than holding a cat and saying sorry on the cats behalf] Kids are curious [just like cats] so invite her to join you when you leave offerings or light incense or put something new on the altar so she can see what's going on. [of course, if this is spell work or something more ritualistic, wait until the child's in bed, but lighting a deity candle or putting fresh flowers on the altar is something the child can appreciate] Perhaps give your daughter her own altar to play with. If yours is out of reach, give them a nearby shelf to decorate how she wishes and she can interact with when you do stuff on your altar. You can treat her altar with a similar level of respect so she knows how to treat yours.
