Mermaid resources

Does anyone have any books or articles they recommend containing useful information about mermaids? I plan to work with them in the upcoming months, and I'd like some background knowledge, before I dive into this.

One I recommend is Mermaids: Myths, Legends, and Lore by Skye Alexander. There's also Water Witchcraft by Anwyn Avalon. Basically any book on working with water spirits should work. Hidden Message in Water by Masaru Emoto is also good. That's less working with mermaids but it goes into the spiritual aspects of water that you can look at to better understand water spirits. Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, most mermaid spells and rituals on the site are fluffy "become a mermaid" spells, so I hope these resources help.

Additionally, it's important to remember mermaid lore is everywhere across the world. I would look into local water lore about local merfolk. You can usually do this by looking into the indigenous stories of merfolk. If you're in the United States, several Native American tribes had water spirit stories, so I would dig into the local tribe lore if you're in the states. Otherwise, go into the ancient lore of wherever you live. Irish had the Merrow, Scottish had the Selkies, Syrians had Atargatis, somewhere in the middle east had Ea, and the Scandinavians had the Havfrue and Havmen, and so on and so forth. You'll have better luck the more you research the local ancient lore. It'll be pretty weird trying to summon a Ngyo (Eastern Asian) from say Australia for example.

If that doesn't work, you can try a mermaid oracle or tarot deck. They can help divine what the merfolk are trying to tell you as you work with them. My favorite is the Mermaid Oracle deck, but there's more lore in the Mermaids and Dolphins Oracle and Affirmation Deck.
