Firstly, a spell, in itself, is not magic. Magic is change in accordance with will. Knowing what magic is and how it works will help someone know how to use spells, as a sort of tool (if they choose to use spells) to attain a magical result.
As for candles, it sort of depends. But the broad answer is that no: Candles are not a necessity. Depending on their use in a working, they may have a specific correspondence, for which other things may be found.
A LED candle will work just fine as a replacement, but for what I have in mind you will not need that. The spell I have in mind is the cord knot spell. Get a purple or black string that is nine inches long, and all the while doing this spell you need to have the intention of the universe giving you a sign magick exists. You are going to tie nine knots in this cord. After the first knot recite “by knot of one, the spell has begun.” Then after the second “by knot of two, it comets true.” Then so on “by knot of three, so shall it be. By knot of four, ‘tis strengthened more. By knot of five, so may it thrive. By knot of six, this spell we fix. By knot of eight, the hand of fate. By knot of nine, belief is nine.” (I slightly altered the spell for your needs, though the original would work too) the most important part in this spell is visualizing what you want to happen and meditating on it. Once you have done this, for the next nine days untie one knot each day. When you do untie your knots, be sure to spend a few minutes meditating on your intent. Also, try to remove any doubts from your mind and don’t think about the spell when you aren’t casting it if you can help it.
