Using different cards

I know that different types of cards can be used for tarot but what I'm not understanding is that, does it matter how many cards the deck actually have compared to a Tarot deck?

I assume you're talking about Oracle cards since Tarot decks usually have 78 cards. With Oracle cards, the numbers vary depending on the artists of the decks. I have three Oracle decks, each one with a different amount of cards, all perfectly usable. The number doesn't seem to matter as much as the feelings or interpretations you recieve while reading the cards.

Oracle decks usually are have their own interpretation system outlined by the deck creator and there a few are have none (like Soul cards) that are based purely on intuition. There are some like the Osho Zen which has a different naming convention altogether but can be read as tarot. Is is split among the community as to whether it is tarot or oracle, it's sort of in between - it's hotly debated on either side. If you're asking if you can use an oracle deck to read as tarot, I suppose you can but as already mentioned most oracle decks have around 50 cards so you won't get a full 78 like tarot. If you wish you can use a regular playing card deck for tarot but only the minors. You'd have to figure something else out for the trumps or just leave them out altogether.

If you're looking to read tarot, I would just suggest getting a tarot deck from the outset.
