A Craftsman's Caliber

One of the subjects I am greatly interested in is craftsmanship - be it mundane, spiritual, or magical. I also seek to better myself in creating or working on something, and I was wondering if other people felt the same. So, I decided to talk about it! Different ideas of what to do together or on our own, what sort of skills we'd like to develop or hone, and in general what craftsmanship means to us. This is also homage to Personified's "March Crafts" post of earlier this year.

Basically what I want people to do here IS GET EXCITED ABOUT SOMETHING AND SEE WHERE IT GOES.

Neat Things I Wanna Do

  • A nest-like water offering bowl with floating seashell tealights (and leaves)
  • Bonsai forest altar of Yggdrasil (Ash) & the Nine Realms (Pine for Svartalfheimr, at least - something deciduous for Alfheimr)
  • Making natural pigment oil paints from ground plants and stones
  • Learn the history of art and nature and their affects on occultism (seriously, the history channel had a thing on a water temple that I can't find anymore)

Skills I want to Develop

  • Digital & traditional painting
  • Sigilcrafting
  • Carving & clay-making
  • Blacksmithing
  • Making clothes
  • Penmanship
  • Poetry & guided imagery

Coven-y Stuffs

  • Train-Ticket Tags as a scrapbook
  • Physical grimoires (maybe one possibly mailed around as Personified has suggested before for adult members)
  • "The Herboratry" being a compendium of our personal work with plants
  • Puzzle pieces designed by each of us and put together to showcase the coven (I did this in the 5th grade, but honestly, it's still a really cool idea in my eyes)
  • Coven Culture Project - something I did back in DaL that I'd like to do again here where we all flesh out what we would be like if we were entities in our own little cultures (it was neat seeing what people came up with)

My sisters and I are super into Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Supernatural. We figured it would be a fun project to create our own little wands and sonic screwdrivers and I found a really simple way of creating some neat stuff on Pinterest.

  • Chopsticks
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Paint
  • Sealing/Finishing Spray

Essentially you just shape the glue around the chopstick the way you want it, let it cool and dry (maybe carve/file/shave a little if you're still wanting to adjust it), paint it, and seal the paint in. It's a neat way to make fun and personalized stocking stuffers for those celebrating cultural Christmas this year.

I like the idea of this post :)

Let's see...

Things I want to do:

  • Gather various materials and decorations for my altar, it looks a bit empty at the moment.
  • Hang up wall decorations (haven't done that since I re-arranged my room)

Skills I want to develop:

  • Resin Crafting
  • Clay sculpting
  • Drawing/painting (I haven't drawn for months)
  • Paper-making

So on my mundane craftsman's list, I've recently got into plastic Gundam models called Gunpla and it is seriously amazing. One, cause I love mecha. Two, because I can feel the drive for quality that I'd lost when I lost my drive completely. It feels so good to experience after years of thinking I'd just become lesser of a person.

Update:

Making stuff with resin is so much fun. I love looking for small things around the house that I can use to make cool molds with and then making and painting the resin copy. I made a mold with this pretty flat rock that I have. The resin casts come out so smooth and are almost perfectly square. I painted them with gold metallic paint, and I think I'll be painting or carving runes onto them.

I still need resin that will cure clear so that it's easier to dye, but I'm hoping I can make some really neat stuff with it and sell the pieces I make.
