Some witches use staffs, like wands but taller to focus and direct energy.
Staffs can be make out of Elm, Ash, Oak, or redwood.
Runes depend on the user. When I had a staff made of Elm wood, I carved runes for power, healing, protection, and good fortune into it.
You can also decorate it with what ever seems right to you. I decorated mine with vines, moss, ribbons, crystals and small bells.
Witches are known to draw their scared circles with their staffs as a comfort blanket.

Staffs are full of your energy, do what you do with your index finger but point your staff and imagine your energy flowing out of your staff creating a line.

When drawing a circle with a staff, some witches perfer to go clock-wise when drawing their circles with their staffs, and as spiritmagick has gracefully mentioned, Build up some energy by either chanting, dancing, or singing and focus on that energy to create your circle.
As a wiccan, I find Elemental Magic and Candle Magick to be very benificial when building energy by calling on them.
Which ever way you go, good luck on your staffwork.
