We do not really know either, since there are theories only, saying how they could be souls of the dead, that are somehow, changed in a way, that they could be of Fae or demonic origins, that they could be non living runaway elementals aka thoughtforms, and some New Agers even say Aliens ( rofl ).
Now, truth be told, any of the mentioned can be easily confused with them, or for them.
Often however, as You have probably read, they act agressively and they do not like being seen, and show strobng repellence to Christian prayers and relics. Which to me supports theory of their Demonic/Fae origins.
Rosemary Ellen Guiley wrote excesivelly on them, there is a brilliant article on webiste of hers as well

to add to the above post, while we aren't sure 100% what it is, mostly there's myths and theories surrounding it. shadow people hauntings are the most common in the US according to a 2010 survey. a shadow person is just that, a a shadow outline of a person. [they're more commonly known as shadowmen btw] a theory is, a shadowman is a 2D being, if it turned sideways it would disappear. more commonly, with all paranormal activity, they're more active at night, but they can be seen in the day, normally out of the corner of ones eye as they move rather fast. they can be on walls or the ceiling, rarely are they on the floor.
shadowmen don't physically attack you, but they 'feed' off strong emotion, and typically it's fear, but depression, joy, and sorry can also be feed on. it just depends, it's most common with fear. the most common way to dispel a shadowman is to 'starve' it, stop fearing it and it will normally leave. while shadowmen are dangerous there are no recorded reports of them physically attacking someone, so really you have little to fear. it's kinda like going to a haunted house at a theme park. you will be scared, and people have been hired to get really close and scare you, but they cannot touch you, so you're in no real danger. mind you, your mind doesn't know that when someone jumps out with a chainsaw.

My idea is that the reason they are repelled so by christian prayer is because when one prays they lose fear. And since fear is what these things tend to feed off of, (as nekoshema said) it is a real bummer for a shadowman.

lol, that was my friend XD that's why she was asking for my help, and i turned here whilst flipping through my demonology books. most shadowmen are easy to figure out, and can be dispelled quickly. my friend has had plenty of experience with them, but this one is different, when she enters the room it changes from black to white, and it does things almost like it's taunting her. that's why she asked me if i knew of anything that looked and acted like a shadowman but is much stronger. i didn't know of any, so i posted here. hope that helps.
hi nekoshema thanks so much for your in-put , like i said the shadowmen thing is new to me so any thing i can learn on this subject i well cool , i hope your friend manages to sort out the trouble , so as someone learning what is the diffarence from the shadowman to say ,a spirit cause a spirit dose not go for just one person sorry to saund thick but this is well interesting.what i am asking is could you explain the diffarence from a ghost to me please .

no problem, you don't sound thick or whatever.
actually, spirits can bother only one person. a poltergeist is German for 'noisey ghost' and typically attaches itself to a single person. these spirits will typically follow around a child who's going through a tough time, and typically is around the age of 10-14. new research shows though that they do attach themselves to adults if they're going through stressful or tough times themselves. there's a belief that they are summoned or created by the vast amount of negative energy produced.
a ghost, is the name given to a being attached to an object or place. if you move or get rid of the object, the ghost goes with it, where as a poltergeist will follow the person everywhere.
a spirit is the weakest of the categories. normally it's someone who just died, or an animal. they're strong enough to be. they cannot materialize, or move things, sometimes you can hear them, but for the most part they're the orbs most people catch on camera or in the corner of their eye.
side note, pictures of orbs are normally ignored by paranormal investigators, as well as many knowledgeable people on the subject. orbs are typically dirt particles reflecting the light from a flash. one way you can tell if it's that or a spirit, take pictures with different settings of the same spot, then do the same in a different location. if it appears in all the photos in the same spot in the picture, irregardless of where the picture's taken. your lens is dirty. if, however, it appears in the same general area in the photos in one location but not in the other location. the chance is greater you photographed a spirit. a common place is stairways. not sure why that is, but there you go.
if you want to speak with spirits, i would avoid Ouija boards, because of their risk, and cemeteries, since very few spirits are there. personally, i loved cemeteries as a kid, so i enjoy the peacefulness and i go there often to think, but how often do people typically go there for a walk? that's why not many spirits remain, unless they don't want to leave there bodies. specters tend to stay in places they loved in lived, or died, or around objects they treasured. most though just travel the world, they might find a place or a person they like and they'll stay for the company. so anything can be haunted, you just need to realize spirits aren't evil. most are confused or scared, or want attention, that's why they act out and make noise. few people can hear/see them, and they want to talk.

This is really where I conflict, because I see every spiritual being as a spirit, great and small. Even the Source is the "Great Spirit". If it has independent thought and emotion than it is a spirit to me. "Ghost" is demeaning because it makes spirits out to be something less than any other person, which they're not. They have feelings and opinion, and should be respected unless their intentions are purely malicious, in which case, it's time to kick butt.

@ raven, personally, i call everything spirits, i was just taught this is how you tell the difference. while i know it's a spirit, and i'll call it a spirit, i'll say 'the spirit it attached to an object.' if i'm typing it out, i'll call it a ghost. personally, when i hear the word 'ghost' i always picture Charlie Brown; bedsheets with two holes for eyes.
