Magic's Potential

One time I read that the definition of magic was, "Bending the Universe to your will." So, doesn't this mean that anything in magic is possible? Why do people say that you can't fly a broom or do other things with magic? "Bending the Universe to your will," in my opinion, is another way of saying that anything is possible. I think that flying a broom is possible and that we shouldn't doubt our abilities or magic's potential. For believing in magic, we can seem kind of closed-minded at times...I'm not trying to offend anybody. I was just curious as to why people don't believe some things are possible regarding magic.

My view is that all things indeed are possible, although not necessarily in the context that you might think :)

yes bending the universe to your will is the action of magick, but that phrase is referred to probable outcomes in natural physics. flying on a broom goes against the laws of aerodynamics and the theory of relativity. not to believe in such things as flying on a broom is not doubting ones ability but realizing that we are a product of what put the cosmos in motion and not the creator of it. we live, abide, adapt, and flow with the world around us material and spiritual

The term " fly on a broomstick" comes from when the witches drugged them selves and they thought they flew. They flew in their imagination, maybe to explore lifes mysteries. But it was very dangerous because they made use of deadly plantextracts.

If the witches of the past didn't really fly on brooms, what's stopping us from trying? And people are always finding things that defy the natural laws

Ok. First off i would like to point out that their is a difference between Magick and Magic. The first is what we all practice. The latter is for stage magic and illusions. The k simply separates the terms and keeps people from questioning which form you mean.

Now to answer your question. Magick in itself defy's sciences so called "laws" most of the time. To use your example...to fly on a broom is entirely possible with magick however i do not know that it has been accomplished as of yet. What would be needed for this is a extreamly open mind, absolutely no doubt, and years worth of energy manipulation practice.

The broom has been used in witchcraft for a very long time. One of its main uses is a physical banishing whilst the witch casts a circle and then sweeps from the middle outword to symbolize it being a space for just the witch and her supplies. Not that a spirit just happend to be crossing as you cast the circle.

When a law of nature is considered to be broken is is no longer a law but reverts back to a theory. laws of physics are things that has been observed to be true. if not witnessed or at least experienced to be true. no one said that you can't try, but in our current knowledge it has not happened.

I don't understand how one can explain the process of how to fly on a broom if they have not done it for them self. in that case it is a theory, and yet to fully achieve such a goal is not an actual procedure but a some what logical method.

I have not yet heard of any laws of nature to truly be broken and if so please enlighten me on which ones.

I agree with am second poster, can't remember your name, sorry :D. yes we can do things in different context than first imagined. An old, and a little bit of a smartass, once said "it is possible to fly on a broomstick, just malt your broom on a air-plain." LoL sorry i didn't answer your question you initally asked. But i felt it needed to be shared :D

Mikki, I don't mean to be insulting, but the reason nobody tries to fly with a broom stick is the same reason that nobody tries to fly with a cape.

After the original superman movie, several children believed with all of their hearts that they would be able to fly. Donning a makeshift red cape, they leaped into the air... and to their deaths.

Similar episodes occurred throughout history as man attempted to build various flying devices until eventually they came up with the hot air balloon, the airplane, etc.

If you want something to happen, by all means, work hard to achieve your dreams. However as somebody else above suggested, the universe does not alter itself for our dreams simply because we believe in them.

To some extent, the concept of bending the universe to your will is very much at the heart of magic. However, the part about magic that is often missed or ignored is that it is also very much about understanding the Universe. This is the reason that our ancestors believed that the gods caused natural disasters. They believed that earthquakes and lightning bolts came from the god. Now we understand that these are the result of tectonic plates shifting, geothermal forces, and lightning is the result of positive and negative ions charging. The ancients created explanations in an attempt to understand what was going on... To understand the world.

Can we manipulate the world around us through efforts of will and energy? Most certainly. But to what extent is debatable, and I very much believe it is limited by the laws of the universe.

Science comes at it from the same angle, albeit with a whole lot less hocus pocus. It doesn't understand much of what we do in magic. It doesn't explain everything that happens in the world. But it has unraveled and provided explanation for a significant chunk of it. Magic and science... the laws of physics and chemistry and so forth... are the opposite ends of the same spectrum. And what they meet in the middle they'll find truth.

as far as I'm concerned, anything is possible with magic. the problem is that something like flying takes a lot of energy.

a broomstick may possibly help you focus the energy, I've never tried it, but few if any people have the kind of focus and energy required to succeed.

defying natural laws takes a lot more energy than we have. if somebody does have that much power, good for them, but the kind of focus required is beyond the normal person as well.

These two barriers are what keep us grounded.
