I’m confused is this spell to protect you from the three fold law or am I reading it wrong?

No, you're reading this correctly. Some people are scared any spell they cast will hurt them in some way, others want to cast something like a curse or a ''break up a couple'' type of spell without consequence, hence this spell. It doesn't work because the universe will always find a way to return to a state of balance. No, not every spell will backfire, and even though you cast a spell for selfish reasons, it doesn't make you ''evil'' and about to receive bad karma. Reflect on the situation before cast, and accept what may happen. People cast curses all the time with no negative effects, some people will receive a backfire from a simple healing spell. Be aware of the energy natural flow, that's really all you can do.
