How you set up an altar and what you put on it is largely up to you unless you are practicing in a Tradition which requires a specific set-up. Is your altar going to be simply a place where you work magic, or (as in Wicca) is it a place to interact with the Divine? A Witch's altar might be very different from the way I set up mine. And a Druid's altar could have differences from a Wiccan one.

If you are interested in one method, I wrote a post a long while ago on the basics of a Wiccan altar. You can find it at https://www.spellsofmagic.com/read_post.html?post=506217

I would also pose the thought that until you are in your own space and are able to openly put together an altar, don't worry about it. You don't necessarily need one.

Once upon a time, I got into a friendly (but lively) debate with a college friend. We were both in a semester of Philosophy and got talking about the necessity of churches. ...Naturally both of our stances were un-moved by the end but it left us both with food for thought.

During the discussion the root of my stance was a simple one; All the world is God's temple, so why should someone be beholden to a place of brick and mortar to worship?

Same question applies here. An altar is a man-made thing. It is a symbol of faith, not faith itself. The same can be achieved through any routine so long as it results in spending time and attention on your spiritual Self. Be it through meditation and contemplation, getting out into nature and being consciously in gratitude, thinking through a quiet dedication before a meal. Heck, go into your backyard and throw out a handful of seed for the birds even. As long as what you do, you dedicate to your faith, then you are achieving the same things.
