French Witchcraft
By:

Hi.

I have been attempting to learn more of practices of the past related to my heritage. My father's side is Scottish and my Mother's side is French.

I have recently purchased a couple of books on Scottish and Celtic lore, yet to no avail have I been able to find books or many other sources pertaining to French Witchcraft.

I am not too interested in the history of witchcraft in France but more the practice of it itself.

If anyone has any links to websites or book recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.

I don’t know if this is what you are looking for but hopefully I can provide some information that might give you a starting point for further research.

My degree is in History. Once I took a class on Rome during the time of Julius Caesar. I also love to read historical novels and have read a few fictional novels about Julius Caesar and this time period as well.

One of the major achievement of Julius Caesar was his conquest of Gaul, modern day France. At the time Rome conquered Gaul it was populated by about 8 major Gallic tribes that had formed a confederation under the leadership of a general named Vercingetorix of the Arverni tribe. I remember that the Druid Priesthood played a heavy role in some of the novels. This gave me a starting point to take a look.

I went on line and searched “Arverni Tribe Gaul Religious Beliefs” I then read that they worshipped a Celtic God named Toutatis or Teutates.

When I searched “Toutatis or Teutates God” I found quite a number of interesting sites.

Hope this helps.

I am at work so I have nothing better to do so I kept on reading, lol. Some of the sites I came across about Toutatis or Teutates were very interesting. I think you will find this one informative.

Most French witches focus on paganism, although although some people said that wicca is another popular path although most French Wiccans are solitary practitioners The French have a very different relationship with religion than Americans I would recommend the book The witch-cult in western Europe By Margaret Alice Murry It talk about French and British witchcraft with a guides and notes of the spells
Hope this helped

Thank you both very much.

I found a book about French Lore I may look into.

All I know close to the practice of French witchcraft is a Catholic folk tradition taught to me over time by my grandmother. I still practice what I can of this family tradition.

Along with a bit of knowledge on lore, and I feel I may better understand some of the practice.
