Ladywitch, it depends a lot on what your idea of a familiar is, and your actual expectations in "summoning" one. Your specific beliefs may also have an influence for how you approach.

For example, many will insist a familiar (short for familiar spirit, by the way) is never a physical animal. In stead, they'll describe a familiar as more like a spirit guide, whether it is perceived as an animal or as something else.

Some may insist that a familiar can be a physical animal, that it is the animal's function in practice that matters.

And there are those who think that when a cat is behaving like any other cat, and getting in the middle of a working because it wants attention that it is a familiar, for example, and that any pet is someone's familiar.

So, again, it all depends on what your expenctations are for how anyone may advise you.
