Handfasting help??

Hello there :) I was wondering , if your reading this , if you could help me with handfasting......

A little background:
My boyfriend proposed to me last night after he got home from work ( His Valentine's day gift to me ), and we are working on how to go about getting married.. His one sided of the family is deeply rooted in Irish Heritage, and the other side is deeply rooted in Germany heritage.. His entire family, a-part from him is Catholic. I'm an electric witch with Irish roots, and my practice leans a lot towards Druidism.

I have done some research as to what handfasting is and have a little bit of mixed feelings towards it ... From my research it says that it is done and the two are "married" for a year and a day and if at the end of that time they wish to stay together than they get married for real. I like the idea about that, I'm just not so sure how to go about everything... We plan to start the process in the fall, since I'd love a fall wedding and August 1st is the festival for this sort of thing ( from my research )...

So my question(s) is, How do I go about setting this up ? Are there any specific traditions for it ? Etcetera... Honestly anything would help right now , any information would be helpful.

I know to follow my heart & do what I feel is right and the God & Goddess will accept us, but being his family is deeply rooted in Irish Heritage and I barely know anything about mine ( family issues), any information at this point would be greatly appreciated!!!
I'd even be good with sites that you think are helpful and I'll read up on it and keep researching!!!

Thank you and
Blessed be

I think it depends on what country your in and what your doing. In the USA, NY state has a rule that you can get an annulment within a year of being married. It's easy to do and inexpensive.
I've done a handfasting and it was a legal wedding and the two were married for real.
If you want to get married, find a judge or minister. I'd suggest you find someone ordained that has knoledge in your branch of study.
Try writing your own vows.
I think you may be thinking of a small service to announce your love. Perhaps an engagement service would work then you can get married the next year?
I did a binding of a couple last summer or late spring. It was just the two of them. They haven't planned a wedding day as of this time. Some seem to be alright with just the pre contract.
Just a few thoughts.

Thank you. The reason I saw it that way was during my research it says during the time if the Brehon law in Ireland that people were handfastened and a year and a day later if they choose to still be together they were married for life. I know the Brehon law was long ago and we live in the USA ( Pennsylvania ).. But I really liked the idea of it and wasn't sure if it is still done that way ..

Thank you again
