Quotes to Convey Us

In a myriad of ways, we can express ourselves with creative thought and make something personally important to us; sometimes, these things ring true with other people as they might find it no less important to them.

Share what rings true to you, cite the author, and then explain why it is important to you. You may find some things in common with one another or even spark an interesting discussion so long as things stay civil.

"Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset." -St. Francis de Sales

I have always tried to move forward with peace in mind especially, in curse work. Moving through life with grace and beauty is a personal goal. Which reminds me of another quote...

I have two tattoos, one on either forearm, that mean a lot to me as a person. I got them both shortly after I attempted suicide and had been in the hospital in a coma for a week. Therefore, they speak a lot to me about myself and about that time in my life.

On my left arm is a quote by Lewis Carroll, which reads: " But it's no use going back to yesterday because I was a different person then ". It comes from Alice in Wonderland. The context of this quote is more or less that Alice acknowledges that the past 24 hours she has experienced has changed her as a person, profoundly. It is as if the person she was earlier is a stranger, a completely different person. As a person, I have gone through loss, depression, isolation and metamorphosis as I transformed into who I am now. Looking back on the past, for me, it feels like I am looking at the actions and memories of a completely different individual. Who I am now is far different from whom I once was, therefore the past is the past.

On my right arm is a quote by Edgar A. Poe, which reads: " I was never really insane except upon occassions when my heart was touched ". To me,this quote means that when you become passionate, endamored or in love with something (where something "touches" your heart and is meaningful to you) it inspires insanity, or feeling and emotion beyond control. For me, this quote represents how as an individual I find myself engaged passionately in things which touch my heart and mean the most to me. My love of science, my devotion to my deities I honor, these are things which touch my heart and inspire insanity within.

A third tattoo I have, which rests along my hips, is another Edgar A. Poe quote that reads: "I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity" . This was a quote I used to represent the depression that I often struggle with. When I felt/feel depressive, I sometimes find myself waking up from a dream and realizing that the nice things I felt while dreaming are not the way reality is, and I find myself disappointed or sad to have been awoken in the first place. Sanity, or being conscious who I am when I feel depressive, is horrible and boring - and in dreaming, in sleeping, in distracting myself I am able to escape from that sanity, from reality, and from the current mood that downs me.

"You are required to do nothing, least of all believe. Shut one's eyes tight or open one's arms wide, either way, one's a fool."

I like this when approaching things spiritually.

"Bitch, real Gs slide in silent like lasagna."

It explains itself, honestly.

"Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crack-pot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost."
Thomas J. Watson

Not really a quote, but it is a really short story soooo:

Hercules and the Wagoner:

A carter was driving a wagon along a country lane, when the wheels sank down deep into a rut. The rustic driver, stupefied and aghast, stood looking at the wagon, and did nothing but utter loud cries to Hercules to come and help him. Hercules, it is said, appeared and thus addressed him: "Put your shoulders to the wheels, my man. Goad on your bullocks, and never more pray to me for help, until you have done your best to help yourself, or depend upon it you will henceforth pray in vain."

"Do not follow others's ways. Make your own." It is something like that. I forgot who wrote it, but it was in my dear small "Book of Knowledge" (also forgot the author, a woman) which I gave as a present to someone. Lots of phrases there really step up to me and made me evolve, even if it was for just the 1 or 2 months I had it, it really helped.
