It is perfectly acceptable to use a sonic screwdriver if that is what will work for you and is what you are comfortable with. Even without pop-culture, people use different materials for wands and other tools all the time.

If your sonic screwdriver is like my sisters', then you may want to see about making one out of metal instead of the plastic/metal combination theirs is. The reason for that being that plastic is not considered a "natural" material or a material occuring via a natural event (like sand struck with lightening to make glass). You can still work with a plastic wand, but the connection to denser energy won't flow as easily. Some find this affects their workings, some don't. It's all trial, error, and personal preference.

I know lots of witches who use all sorts of materials for their wands and I believe that sonic screwdriver could be used as long as you are comfortable with it and if it feels right :)

I would not use plastic. But that's me. It's the intent of how you're using it, not the fact that it lights up. Heck, but a Harry Potter one, they light up.

i'm a bit of a nerd too and wanted a metal wand. i bought 2 stainless steel rods (different sizes) off ebay quite cheaply. they're pure stainless steel and an excellent shape.

personally i would keep the screwdriver for its intended screwdriver use. there's no harm in seeing it as one of your wands, mind. my 2 smartphones are basically wands to me. they focus my powers.

of course some say you should only have 1 wand...
