If you're talking about a coven on the site: you'll have to go to the groups tab, read through the descriptions of each of the covens, and determine which covens suit your interests based off of that. It's a good idea to mail the priest/esses from each coven you're interested to maybe ask how the coven runs and what they offer. Some require you to fill out an application so keep that in mind.

a lot of covens seem to overlap in their information.
also, my understanding of the roles of the leaders is unclear.
i know their roles can be different as applied to the specific covens, however, in a coven setting respectively, there has to be a general meaning or purpose of the leader(s) as defined by what makes a coven a coven.

Many of the covens probably do, but overall many of them have different purposes or goals and function differently.

The priest/ess are leaders are in charge of making the coven what it is. They decide the direction of the coven: They organize it, enforce rules or policies, let in new members, etc.
