Okay so after hardcore researching for two days of the mind, energy, prana energy, and lucid dreaming I think I kind of have an idea of what it's all about..
So this is what I think, correct me if I'm wrong:
Spells are based off energies and demons. Each spell you cast you
need to set your mind to do the spell through energy?
I heard that people have a few demons around you that lead you through life or something similar like that? This is what a friend told me, I don't know if he's right or wrong:
"The thing with demons is that you can use them to get anything you want but there's always a tradeoff, like you might find $100 on the ground then immediately get hit by a car"
Spells are indeed based on the ability of the caster to harness energy. And the intended desire/ use. There are some great articles and forum posts about the basics, and they are ever expanding. As to demons, I would suggest learning the basics first, as summoning them is more advanced than a person newer to the path is capable of. From what I understand, they are very powerful entities that do not take kindly to being summoned by those who lack the ability.

Spells do indeed happen because the caster is able to gather, focus, and direct energy towards their desired goal.
However, spells do not necessarily require demons in order to work. The vast majority of magic has nothing whatsoever to do with demons. Heck, many of us don't work with demons at all (I certainly don't.)
Your friend is incorrect regarding demons surrounding you and guiding you. Perhaps if you were to summon and then bind them to your purpose, but not just as a general thing.

If your friend meant daemon, a general greek term for higher spirits, than yes, in an animism based belief system (that everything has a spirit/life force), all magick is spirit and we have spirits around us that guide us.
But "demon" in the definition of "infernal spirit"... No. Only those that specifically seek out to work with infernal spirits work with infernal spirits. Their are plenty of magicians, witches and the like that work with angels, nature spirits, deities, etc. and have never worked with infernal beings.
When working with spirits of any sort, yes, there is generally always a trade but experienced practitioners that are familiar with the spirits they work with know exactly what that spirit likes and offers it (be it incense, tobacco, food, drink (alcohol), blood, ceremony, etc). It is inexperienced practitioners that ask, receive, and do not give proper offerings that end up getting hit with a "price" they didn't anticipate. That's the metaphorical lightening bolt smiting you for being stupid.
