You're quite right. They wouldn't have easily have been felled in the ancient world, and they have never been sighted in the modern world - No remains have ever been found, either.

So how could they have been wiped out? Where are these many, giant, flying lizards hiding? Especially when they breath fire?

Something like that couldn't be hidden from satelites and the numerous video recording devices throughout the world, could they?

So if they couldn't have been wiped out before modern times, and if they couldn't avoid being spotted or leaving some kind of evidence behind in modern times, that leaves us with only one logical conclusion:

They never existed.

Jinkies, another mystery solved for the gang.

Now, it's debated that they exist astrally. Certainly dragon-like spirits might be encountered, but again this brings us to the matter of perception with such things, and the fact that no spirit has a true form so it is all a result of how such an entity's identity is perceived. The whole idea of "dragon magic" and so forth is generally very modern, and largely fueled by pop culture, be it New Age pop culture or Hollywood.

I should add, if anybody can site where draconic lore and magical practice predates the more modern phenomena outside of concepts within Eastern Celestial Courts or vague suggestion of European myth, please do so. I'd love to know, as there has not been a soul who has been able to do so for me.

It is true that many people believe in dragons; especially in Wales! (There is a dragon on the flag!)
But, then, some people will believe anything! We should always be aware of one fact--a belief does not make it true!

Brysing, you may know. Where is the dragon rooted within Welsh belief? When thinking of European lore, I immediately thought of the Welsh flag and was wondering where this comes from beyond European rules adopting fearsome symbols for their heraldry.

I have no idea where the Welsh dragon originates. But it does seem to be deeply ingrained. I don;t think most Welsh people actually believe in dragons. I think may take them as a "symbol" of a strength of character.
The belief seems to be very old!

It does indeed, and that's why I hesitate to say that the European spiritual concept of the dragon originates more within Eastern influence. You see this concept rooted in many old world cultures, but most if it seems to be lost in stories akin to Arthurian Myth.

Further, the patron Saint of England is St George, who reputedly killed a dragon! Nobody in England actually believes it, of course!
It's just a nice story, and the kids love it!

Haha, yeah. That's the sort of Arthurian-esque legend that comes to mind.

lol loved your Scoobi Doo reference AwakeTooLong.

working with flamingbirds question they were physical beings wiped out by humans:

it does make you think, but they didn't just have bows and arrows. catapults for instance, and it would of been a long battle, but dragons have a softer underbelly, shoot them there, or cut off their head depending. ever seen How to Train your Dragon? they talk about ways to kill various dragons. so, it would be difficult, but i don't think it's impossible.

are they physically real, and if so, where are they now?

there's a belief that dragons traveled to the astral when humans began to hunt them. how this was done, not too sure. maybe Merlin helped, whatever reason they're now astral beings, like spirits, you can communicate with them, and ask them to help you with your spells and rituals, but it's all dealing with spiritual energy. not a physical fire breathing dragon. [side note, not all dragons breath fire, you're thinking of the European, but i can name a few that don't breath fire. ice dragons for example, lindworms for another] they can do some damage to you if you upset them, just as you would a demon or a spirit you summoned.

Dragon Magick:

while i've written an article that can be found in the spell casters rituals book [and i've linked to you several times flameingbird] a Dragon Magick practitioner is not dealing with a physical dragon. Merlin and King Arther and all that are legends, don't assume they're fact. you're calling upon dragons to aid you in your spells and rituals, the same way one might call on the elements or the gods. Dragon Magick is a very personal path, and it deals more with spirituality than riding dragons and fighting goblins. and yes, since it was mentioned, Dragon Magick is a new concept, pretty much everyone agrees D.J. Conway started it. as i mentioned above, however, it's far more spiritual than you may think. i actually do very little with dragons. i call upon the dragons of the four elements when casting my circle, but other than that, i go and see them when i need help in my studies, be it energy work, spell casting, herbalism, or whatever.
