Unpopular Opinion Time!

Opinion

A belief or judgement that rests on grounds insufficient to produce completely certainty. A personal view, attitude, or appraisal.**

Magick has no color, only intent.

Fact

Something that actually exists; reality; truth**

Psychologically speaking, humans associate colors with concepts.

We need to stop stating our opinions as facts. It is of my opinion that this can be damaging to the intellectual growth of the community as a whole; especially to the thousands of newbies who have created accounts for this website specifically to learn more about magickal practice.

The only reason that the first phrase was mentioned is that someone thought someone else was treating color magick as literal colors of magick. Yet, knowing that most people use them as subjective labels of intent, we (collectively to anyone this applies to) regurgitate this opinion as fact .

Even some "facts" were just uncontested opinions....the world is flat...was at one time considered to be a fact. What did they base that on when they decided it was flat? They looked up...saw the semi-circular sky...looked around saw the earth which appeared flat...and so the belief of the illusion began and over time, became a "fact" until humanity found out otherwise when Columbus didn't fall off the face of the earth.

I completely agree with this post!

Facts are based upon evidence which has been collected in abundance over and over again.

Belief and opinions have no evidence which is objective and applicable to anyone else. They are completely subjective.

Agreed. It is hard for the new ones to learn anything with so many so-called facts. Opinions should be just that, opinions. And beliefs, also, along with opinions should be made clear that that is what they are; opinions/belief. Thanks for posting this. Blessed Be All.

I think that almost everything stated is either opinion or belief. As stated above, facts can even be proven wrong sometimes . So who's to say anything is true? I know that's a little too.. generalized I guess. I would like to reference a saying I once heard: "believe none of what you see and only half of what you hear."

The one person experiences magick is going to most likely be different from anyone else's experience. Making their whole view of magick, an opinion/belief. Some would even say it is a fact that magick isn't real.

That being said, it is hard for newbies to learn when everything is an opinion. But the only way I think you actually can learn magick is through hands on experience. After reading the FAQ section, one will understand that some spells aren't possible. One can tell if the person they are talking to should or shouldn't be believed based on the ranking beside their user name.

They then should be able to figure out that there are other things they shouldn't be so quick to believe either. They should fork their belief based off of information gathered from many sources as opposed to just stopping their investigation after hearing only one persons response to their question. But the whole world is that way. I don't believe we should always warn somebody that "this is just my opinion." I feel like that's something that should already be known, and its a hassle to state that every time one replies to a post, message, chatter, etc.

Dezzy, the correct adage is, "Don't believe everything you hear. Don't believe everything you read. And only believe half of what you see".
It was written many years ago by a famous stage illusionist, as advice to young stage magicians. But, for me, it holds true for real life.My witch teacher told it to me when I was very young.
