Magic(k) Limitations

Could someone please explain all the limits of magic? I know some include flying, teleporting, and shapeshifting (Phisically). But what are all the limitations of magic?

All the limits? This becomes difficult, as some things are definitely more about belief than provable fact.

In my opinion, you could add things like controlling the weather, telekinesis (actually, any of the remotely controlling physical objects with your mind -- but there is debate on this), directly reading people's minds, regrowing severed limbs, and the list can go on and on.

Teleporting? Only through astral projection. Magic isn't as it is depicted in the movies, it works differently. If you do a astral projection session (sometimes I astral project myself by mistake when I'm falling asleep) you can do everything you want. In real life, you can't do these things.

on the physical, magick is a natural neutral energy that is ruled by nature and cannot contradict nature. when you cast a spell, you charge this energy into your body, direct it on a path, and give it a positive or negative charge in the process. magick brings change. while not everyone who believes in magick cast spells, magick energy affecting change can be seen in the change of seasons, change in self [the soul searching that brings you from one stage to another] even technology can be considered "magick" [you were inspired to improve or invent something] as for spells, this turns magick more into a "ritualize prayer" where you are gathering items and asking for a specific thing to happen [you may call on a deity, you may not, magick doesn't have a god to make it work] the thing you need to remember is if it contradicts nature, it won't work. you can cast a money spell, but instead of a stack of cash appearing before you, you might receive a cheque in the mail, a promotion at work, a new credit card. these are natural ways one can gain money. same goes for love, luck, even curses. the belief with curses [all spells really] is, we have magickal energy all around us, and by charging enough similar energy [love energy, luck energy, harmful energy] you can affect your life to attract more of that energy.

so in short, what magick cannot do is physical transformation, teleportation, levitation, flying, granting superpowers, and basically anything that sounds cool and you saw in a movie. there are some grey areas with magick [specifically weather, death, and beauty spells] but i would avoid casting those until you have better footing on what magick is/isn't. finally, there is an astral projection, where your astral self leaves your physical form and can travel to other planes of existence. if we are referring to magick on other planes, then it's different as different planes of existence has different laws affecting magick, so it's best to stick with understanding the physical plane before skipping ahead.

Talking as a practicing weather witch, controlling the weather is a kind of magick that can be successfully performed by a weather witch. It isn't a limitation, it is a kind of magick.

One might be able to influence the weather where one lives, but you cannot actually control the weather, such as summon a snowstorm in July, or stop a hurricane, or cause it to rain on a cloudless day.

The general rule to magick is to provide subtle spiritual/metaphysical influence to whatever it is you'retrying to achieve. The idea of creating supernatural phenomenon with intention alone is mostly based out of myth, fantasy, and old, archaic propaganda both against non-Christian belief systems and governments and in support of conversion to Christianity (i.e. claims of Saints performing miracles).

No matter what, you are limited by the physical boundaries of this reality. What defies the laws of science cannot be achieved by chanting a few words and waving a stick you found in the backyard.

Magick is only part of a much bigger system. That system is only defined by your personal understanding and application.

I know this all sounds a bit vague, but it's such a broad subject with several different interpretations that to give it a singular definition would be missing the entire concept of magick itself.

I hope this somewhat helps.

Here is my explanation of what magic is in terms of science and why magic cannot break the rules of physics and genetics. This is the revised version.

Magic is asserting one's energy to influence the outcome. In physics, there are the three laws of motion that magic follows. The first law is the law of inertia. Energy will continue to flow at constant motion until extra force is applied. The second law is the net force equates to the mass times acceleration. In terms of energy, the amount of it and it's flow matters in spell casting. Some spells and rituals requires more energy than others. If the amount of energy, or the speed of its flow changes, the net force applied will change as well. The third law states what is put in equates to what is put out. The amount of energy the caster puts out equates to what will be put into the caster. This is why caution must be taken when casting certain spells as the type of energy puts out may return to the caster. This concept is quite similar to the Law of Attraction. If one puts out negativity, negativity returns to them, and if positivity is put out, positivity will return to them. There is a theory called the observer effect. The act of observing will influence the target that is being observed. Think about intentions and willpower. Once a target person is selected, the caster uses their own energy plus intentions/willpower to affect the person and even their way of life.

At a cellular level, as you may have known, we are full of energy. In chemistry, energy is heat. We are endothermic, and are able to maintain body heat, with little influence from the environment. We are constantly using energy to survive. In terms of spell casting, we use our energy to influence the outcome. There is positive and negative energy; high and low energy. In psychology, high energy is influenced by the feeling of jubilation, having activity, and positivity, whilst low energy is influenced by depression, stagnation, and negativity. This can affect our daily routine. Positive and negative energy plays a major role in spell casting. It can be used to hurt others or help others, depending on your intentions. However, caution must be taken as spells can still backfire and might hurt the practitioner instead.

In terms of limitations, magic isn't something seen in Hollywood movies. It's not turning into some mythical creatures nor control elements like The Avatar: The Last Air Bender. It's using one's energy to influence the outcome of one's desire. If you want to further understand energy, see this link:

Disclaimer :There are still quite a number of things science cannot explain. However, magic still follows certain rules of science. Even in biology, a lot of topics are considered theories because they are subject to more experimentation before proven.
I hope this post has been informative.
