Knocking

I was going outside of my house and everyone that I live with was asleep. When I was closing my door to come outside I clearly heard 3 knocks coming from the inside of the door. But when I opened it there wasn't anyone or anything there. I don't know what it could have been, but it gave me a sinking feeling. So I closed the door and ran to be under the moonlight. It calmed me, now I just don't know.

Can anyone help me understand what this could have been?

When it is very quiet, soft noises can seem much louder than they are. Try again to very slowly move the door. See if you hear similar. I suspect the hinges creaked a little.

Not to be creepy but 3 knocks can also be an omen of death. Did someone close to you die?

I did try that, thinking it was the hinges, but I noticed it because the door doesn't squeak at all.

And as far as I know no one close to me has passed.

Has it happened since? Periodically, I would hear knocking on my walls...and it was just a way to get me out of bed to lock a door when I forget or miss one.

It hasn't happened since, but if felt important when it happened. I don't know how to explain it.

A message from a spirit? Or a mouse? Or the wind. Depends how loud it was. What kind of knocking. Was it a knock, knock, knock? Or a knock...gap knock...gap knock..
