I'm not certain exactly what you mean by "hand magic" Perhaps you could clarify your questions a bit more.

But remember, the stories of Merlin are mythology, not fact. So it isn't likely that much of the magic in those tales are reality or possible

I believe the technical term is 'Somatic' (defined as 'relating with the body') spell working. Most commonly used to refer to using hand gestures and visualization in lieu of the voice. And while I do believe personally it could be used as a way to work energy and magic, you aren't going to get the kinds of flash and effects you see in movies and literature. No matter what techniques you use.

In the end, words and tone of voice are symbols. Very complex and meaningful ones, but symbols nonetheless. hang gestures can be symbolic as well. Many classical meditation practices involved specific hand gestures to connect energy to specific meridians and focus the mind on specific chakras. Others use hand poses to symbolize certain virtues like strength, will, silence, etc. ...Though I have not heard of these sorts of gestures being used beyond avenues of meditation, I can see how one might apply them. it would be a slow process of building a personal library of hand poses that have significant personal meaning, and using them as a focal point of intent.

the reason why voice is so potent in magic is because it is a literal act of manifestation the insubstantial into substance and projecting it outward. You form a thought out of an intended goal, turn the thought-form into a series of linguistic symbols to give it a recognizable meaning, then project those words outward in the form of sound- a physical effect that creates external action.

Considering that sign-language does the same thing, only visibly instead of audibly, I can imagine somatics could be made useful in a magical setting. It might just take a bit more concentrated effort and practice for an individual to feel fluent in such a method.

I would suggest studying palmistry and reflexology, as both are focused on the different meanings and associations of the hands (and feet) and the stars, planets, meridians, and other facets they are associated with.

Another option would be books on chakra meditations, and martial arts. Information specific to hand poses and their significance might be harder to find, but worth looking for. From there you might build some useful associations and how they could be used with visualization and meditation to achieve your goal.

Hope this helps!

Spirit is quite right. Gestures and visualization can indeed be used in lieu of spoken or chanted phrases.

You might want to look into the Hindu concept of " Mudras " which are specific hand positions used to direct energy. After all, a spell in whatever form is a way of moving energy in order to manifest that which you want to happen.
