I experience similar feelings when I look in the mirror for extended periods of time. The simple way of explaining it: If you stare into the abyss long enough, it will stare back. Scrying mirrors, or black mirrors, are a common tool for those seeking to communicate with spirits/deities, or access different parallels wherein you may scry the future.
If I were to label the state of mind I enter when staring into either a blackened mirror or a bathroom mirror, it would be that of a meditative trance, and I say so due to the feeling of immense calm and peace that I feel. This is the key to the door you're knocking on. If you can learn to understand this state of mind by experiencing it as much as you can, you'll begin to notice different things about you. Keep a journal and start by creating 5 or so questions to ask yourself with the bottom of the page being used for "comments" and extra thoughts. Practice this for as long as you like and you'll not only see differences in the way you look at yourself, but how you look at the world.
