Protection for sure, grounding and a meditation I was recently recommended by a knowledgeable person: Imagine a white bubble surrounding you, so strong that no negativity comes inside. You should do those before practising.
Also, make sure you get in a trance state; you do that by taking a few deep breaths at the beginning while focusing on then and then, by focusing on the natural flow of your breath. At least that's how I do it...
I guess some crystals could help you or incense but I'm not aware of them.
Also, for many people practising in the morning could help, after 4-6 hours of sleep... Adter you wake up from thpse hours, do something tk keep busy your mid for about 15 minutes. If I were you I'd wash my face, breath in some fresh air and meditate a while for grounding and the white bubble technique.
