This is a meditation I wrote that's supposed to help you become closer and bond with your familiar. Feedback would be nice
Bonding with your Familiar
The Familiar or a picture of the familiar
Something that belongs to the familiar
With the familiar or the picture of the familiar and an item that belongs to the familiat
Start by sitting down and meditating. Do this until your mind is clear of all thoughts
Once cleared of all thoughts
Visualise a string or a wire connecting you to your familiar
Visualise it becoming stronger and stronger until you have a bond of sorts
As you visualise this, be aware of your familiar relaxing against you, Trusting you, letting you know that no matter what you're in this together
If you have a picture of the familiar, Imagine the exact same things
Do this everyday for as long as you feel necessary
You should feel a stronger bond with your familiar each time you do this

Can this be used to seek a familiar as well? For those who dont know / are unaware of their familiar or just feel they dont have one. And are their any benefits in having a familiar? Sorry ^^ not my general expertise so i have to ask from curiosity

Familiars are kind of confusing, it depends what you believe really. Historically it was believed a witch would get their pet to do their evil bidding [or they could also transform into them, can't remember exactly] so if something bad happened and someone noticed a cat, it was the evil doings of the creepy old lady who owns said cat.
Today I've heard a few claims what familiars are, some say it's an energy form you create, others it's an actual animal you put energy into, or an animal you have a spiritual bond with. Personally, it's an animal with a spiritual bond. You can also train your pet to help/join you in your craft, but not all animals will be true familiars. Familiars can sense energy, so while you may be able to train your dog to sit in a certain spot in the circle, a cat would be harder. An author I love writes how her one cat could sense the energy, and would walk around the circle, but her other cats could not, so all but the one cat needed to be put in a seperate room.
Meanwhile, if you wish to train your pet, there are many ways to try, but it takes time and you need to figure out the subtle cues of the animal, you can train it. You can train your pet to rest beside you or in your lap while meditating, but regard the animal, if it seems like it wants to play, don't force it to sit still.
The meditation seems interesting, might try it if I get a pet one day.

The fact of the matter is that our beloved pets and a Witch's Familiar are two very, very different things.
A Witch's familiar is an animal spirit or a magical construct created by the Witch or the Magician as an adjunct to their magical workings, as a repository for power, and if needed as a defense against magical attack from another magic user. A Witch or a magician can draw upon the energies of the familiar when they need an extra boost of energy in a magical working. Conceivably if the spell is important enough, the Witch could completely drain the familiar of energy causing it to "die" or cease to exist. And in the case of a magical attack, the attack could be diverted to the familiar so that it would be the familiar which is destroyed rather than the magic user. None of these are things that I think any of us would want to do with our pets.
There is an excellent article on familars here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Familiar_spirit
Animals are very sensitive to the energies around them and they may be drawn to us when we are working magic because they can sense the energy. They also want to be around their people, which again will make them want to be where we are..and that may be where we are doing magic. Neither of these things makes the animal a familiar or inherently magical in and of itself.
