Ego Death

Years ago while a member of this website, I was introduced to a form of ego deaths.

Whether or not this is the same form as commonly referred to within the occult community, I don't know. It was never a point of much research for me during this time, and so I took the words of those I most trusted/looked up to on this site. During this time, those members I looked up to were as prevalent as the heathenry on the site now, so it was something which nearly everyone understood what one was speaking about.

Ego death was the phrase that was used to describe when one released oneself of the ego and became a part of the environment around us. We put our ego aside and become a part of the universe. By ego, not only do I mean the part of us that has a high amount of pride, etc, but I also mean the sense of self as separate from the world around us.

In performing an ego death, one becomes connected to the universe or one particular aspect of the universe, whether this be within the self or within what is around us. Within the self deals with an aspect of the mirco-marcocasm or the idea of "as above, so below". By viewing/experiencing aspects of the universe, we are revealed lessons about ourselves, and vice versa. I consider it a form of perfect connection, perfect being, however to my knowledge a fully "awakened/idealized" state of ego death is not something that is a constant. Rather, in order to exist and function within the "real world" one must lower this perception of oneness and wholeness.

When you become a part of everything else (whether it be within you or without you), doors that would not normally be open are flung wide for you. The parts of your past, whether in this life or in the ones previous to this one, are a part of the whole. So by becoming one with the whole and setting aside the sense of self as an individual, you can find it easier to access those forgotten or hidden parts of yourself.

During an ego death, one often gets visions and insights into things that they normally would not see or think, and sometimes while coming out of an ego death they can forget these happenings or more commonly they seem dull and lifeless in memory. While in an ego death, you can focus yourself on certain aspects such as past lives, however it is more recommended to go with the flow as focusing can cause you to fall out of the state.

If you wish to undergo an ego death, you will need a good amount of time spent doing deep meditation and/or trancework. The better you are at these the easier it will be for you to perform it properly. It is also important that you are willing and able to let go of yourself as an individual, and yourself in general. If you can't let go of yourself, you won't necessarily experience the oneness or wholeness that an ego death is intended to bring. Saying this, simply going through the ego death without being able to fully disconnect the first couple of times can allow it to be easier at a later time. In my case, I allowed my ego to be made smaller through several sessions before I fully was able to perform one. If you are able to, you should get a person or persons to watch over you (spiritually and/or physically) while undergoing an ego death. The spiritual part is to ensure you do not damage yourself while attempting this state and this means the person watching over you should be familiar with it.

Physically speaking, it is important that you are not disturbed, as distruption can cause negative effects for you. I once was shocked by someone disturbing me during an ego death and I wasn't right for several days. You should ensure that you have plenty of time to undergo it and/or set an internal clock to come out of it after a specific amount of time.

To perform an ego death, one simply has to go into a meditative state, focus upon the particular energy they wish to work with, and unleash all blocks which separate that energy from the self. You allow these energies to flood in and become a part of yourself, then allow yourself to become lost within them and a part of them.

If more explaining of the process itself is necessary, I'll do so, but it really is that simple and that complex.

If anyone needs someone to look after them through this sort of process, I'm willing to work with you on this. It's nice to have someone else there to catch you so you don't fall as hard. I'm also willing to help with some of the "training" one might need to undergo before attempting this. This work is incredibly important to me and to my practices, and it's something I want to share.

I do something similar during my before ritual cleansing. Basically I release the floodgate of my energy to knock out any possible blocks. Also helps clear the head and allows me to focus better on what I must do next.

I think this post is wonderful and I'm surprised it hasn't spurred more discussion. I undergo several ego deaths in a day, where I knock myself down a peg to look at where I really stand in the world around me. This helps me be self aware and it improves my decision making.

I have read about people using ego death to remove blockage and clear away detritus so new spiritual growth can happen. What are signs you are making progress with the ego death and that it is complete?
