keep in mind 'potion' is a blanket term, basically any spell you cast which requires a liquid falls under a potion. it could be an oil, a tea, a brew, a bath, a lotion, even a chant over soup could be considered a potion. i suggest picking up Scott Cunningham's Incense, Oils and Brews it's an excellent source for beginners, it gives an explanation, a method of creating them, and a bunch of recipes to choose from.

also note, not all potions are meant to be ingested, some are meant to anoint items, to be worn, or smelled. [like with baths, it's normally salts or oils placed into your bath for the aroma] be sure you not only research the ingredients used to be sure they're not poisonous, but also speak with your doctor and have an allergy test to be 100% safe you won't have a reaction to an item.

when making potions, as with casting spells, you need to focus, visualize your desired outcome as you make the potion. then again when you use it. [if it's a tea, slowly sip it while visualizing your intent] i think the easiest potion to start with would be a tea, take a couple herbs of similar magical properties, place them in a coup of boiling water, let steep for 3-5 minutes, then take them out [if you have cheesecloth you can make a teabag, if not strain it or pick them out if they're springs] and drink. if you want to say a chant while drinking or it's steeping that's fine. i tend to cup my hands around the cup and charge it with energy while i visualize.
