Lovely post Caleb, thank you. Speaking of runes, although while I don't follow the Norse path directly I chose current username and occasional spiritual name Othala because of it's symbolism. Family is very important to me as well as my lineage, and I value other aspects of what the rune symbolizes.

I also wanted to mention, in addition to your post, that anyone can make their own set of runes for their magical path, workings, and as a use for a magical language. You can simply create symbols that symbolize certain aspects or things that are significant to you or you can create a rune for each letter of your alphabet. I have personally created several of my own rune sets in my path and practice and find it very meaningful and worthwhile, as well as fun.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that tid bit, and thanks again Caleb.

Green Blessings,

Othala

silly question, but just to make sure i understand,
"Merkstave" means something similar to a tarot card being reversed?

Yes it is when they are reversed or laying strewn in a certain pattern

thanks, bored :) and tet, yes. when a rune is merkstaved, it is usually upside down, or close to it, and it usually brings a negative, and generally opposite meaning of what it meant, although some people don't read merkstaves.
im not quite sure if its the same though, since i have no idea about tarot, but the concepts are probably along the same lines

Awesome post Vicious. I like your easy to follow meanings. It would be awesome of you to do a post on how to do a rune reading. Good info though. I'll be keeping it on reference.

I still really love this post, Cviss. I would like to see you do more writing on this, or perhaps dedicate a whole article to bindrunes, bloodrunes, etc.

Bind Runes

A bind rune is basically a sigil with two runes combined on it. they can be inscribed one on top of the other (e.g. http://goo.gl/9t46d, in sequence like a word, or a double sided one. its really limited to your imagination. or really any way you can combine them. However, not all series of runes are bindrunes, they can also just be a written word (or both).
bindrunes can have a number of purposes, so ill try to be general. some can be used for practical purposes (heres a good sized list http://goo.gl/RnDAh)or as a personal thing, sort of like a keychain with your name on it, but in runes. they could have your first name, last name, full name, initials, nickname, etc, etc. or to support a characteristic you want strengthened (e.g. http://goo.gl/0nMYs) again, the applications are only limited to your imagination. see the original post for how to make one.

Awesome post vicious! I really enjoy making and using bindrunes. They add more depth to rune working.
