For thousands of years people have made up superstitions, and weddings of course had many. In the past when a person got married it was meant to last, for the fact that divorce was not an option. So picking out a certain wedding date said a lot about the couple.

This is a very old custom that is still around, also keep in mind that many Romany take on the Religion of the country they are living in, so it is not uncommon for a Romany to be Christian, Muslim, etc.
