No angelo. Words and materials don't cause magick.

Frank,
Words created by the human mind relate to the human minds using them. Communication is very important to our psychology and between speech and visual it is how we process information. So we use words and visualization to facilitate our own mind's processes to convince ourselves that we are actually doing something and to define exactly what that something is.

How does this help us? Well, the power of mind over matter is scientifically proven, the placebo effect for example. But in order to perform mind over matter one must truly believe and/or be extremely determined and confidant in success. Some people walk over hot coals and are not burned to prove how strong there ability of mind over matter is. When we believe, we have confidance, and high confidance directly relates to strong willpower. Willpower, belief and focus is all that is needed in order to practice magick--in short, the mind.

Sometimes, in order to make something happen, our mind must conclude that there must be a physical cause (enter sympathetic magick). This is why we use ritual.

Ultimately, we use our minds to produce or draw energy that effects to our desires. Many belief that our perception is our reality. Two people can witness the same scene and describe it differently. Like attracts like, and due to this, when we focus on a particular outcome, we are attracting that outcome.

A spell could be cast as simply as saying a few words, or as complex and having to collect the matreials, contruct an item [lets go with a poppet] and spending every day for a month preforming some ritual with a bunch of candles and people all working together. the bottom line is magic is nothing more than energy, a spell is a way to take in the energy around us and change it to benifit our needs. since spells work if one believes, that's why some believe a more elabourate ritual, while others feel a simple chant works best. personally, i like chants or potions, though a spell now and then is fine with me.

Back quite a few years ago the Rosicrucians were experimenting with a device called a sthenometer, it cosisted of a small balanced pointer suspended by a fine thread over circle with degree marks fro ooo-359 degrees.the device was encased in a quartz or glass housing. when you were concetrating your energy on thi pointer it would move. this was developed to verify that humans can and do focus or energy to affect or enviroment. Just a bit of information to help explain why we focus our energy to alter things we want to change.

There is a book by the title "Mind Machines you can Build" By G. Harry Stine, I covers some amazing experiments using the human mind. Remember most humans use between 10-15% of the brain, that means 85-90% lies dormant to our conscious mind.

The answer is simple: You cast a spell by drawing and shaping energy to do what you want it to. Words, items, etc, are nothing more than focuses to allow you to do it faster, or with less wasted energy. i rarely use words or any kind of object unless the object allows me to something i can't normally do.
