Er.. Personally I meditate to explore my past lives. If I need very accurate things such as dates, times, or names, I will use my pendulum to determine these things.
A pendulum can be made in a pinch by taking any object with weight (a paperclip, a pendant, etc) and putting it on the end of a string. You discern positive or negative response by how the pendulum swings.
