Covens can absolutely help a newbie learn, depending on where and what you're wishing to learn. Online covens are often just groups of people with like-minded interests that come together and post in forums. In real life covens are a bit different, and have specific rules and ways of initiating someone into their coven. No experience is needed for most covens, but if you look at each individual groups welcome message, it'll typically tell you if there's an age restriction or experience level needed. I, personally, would go with the one that calls out to you, and one that you think is going to help you on your path the most successfully.
