There is this believe in my country that candle left on the window ledge ,guides the lost souls to find their inner light.
Also in our churches there is second ring on the massive candelabrum ,dedicated entirely to put the candles people lit for deceased ones.It is believed again that this act helps to guide the spirits and helps the souls to be at peace.
Candle is seen as representation of the four elements combined and being in balance thus attracting/channeling the fifth element energy /quintessence /aether ,soul ,spirit ,anima ,animus (whatever you want to call it from all of the above). When all the elements are in balance they ascend /attract/activate the spirit and by balancing it can rise above .As below so above.Spirit/energy created the elements but in same time the elements combined also represent spirit and attract it.

other people say they feed off of the energy's that the candles and the element fire gives off, but I also herd the story about the Samhain, and the candles in the pumpkins guides love ones that passed away to you, and also warns away evil spirits.

I agree with artindark
And also the light lures them
The history behind the light is in many religions some examples

Zoroastrian

Light is the core concept in Iranian mysticism. The main roots of this thought is in the Zoroastrian beliefs, which defines The supreme God Ahura Mazda as the source of light

Christianity Catholicism

Sunday is Christmas, when billions of believers say Christ was born to be the light of the world, fulfilling God's first gift to the heavens and earth: "Let there be light."

Greek mythology

It is said Zeus struck down Apollo's son Asclepius with a lightning bolt for resurrecting Hippolytus from the dead so the lighting bolt represent light

So yes the fires light represent the light
Blessed be :) )0(
