We all know that some spirits will choose to help people, some are malevolent, and some just don't care about people: but what determines who they help? I have been told "it depends on the spirit" but does it also depend on the person and how receptive they are?
It could depend on the receptiveness of the person, but I feel it mostly depends on the spirit, as you mentioned, and how the human treats the spirit.
Say if a human treats a particular entity with little to no respect, then it is much more likely to treat the human in the same manner, just as if you were communicating with a person. (Although I'm a little more formal when speaking to spirits than I am speaking to humans)
The person who told me "It depends on the spirit" is a spirit himself. I think you are right about the treatment of the spirits, if I treated him badly he wouldn't be interested in helping me or keeping in contact with me. I act very informally with him because we know each other and it makes him feel uncomfortable when I treat him formally.
Many spirits could help you. Mostly higher spirits - angels, gods and goddesses, fairies, some demons,.. could help.
But they have different roles. And when you need help, so you need ask the spirit corresponding with what you wish for.
And often it depends on which way do you ask him/her. :-)
The best is a meditation about a name of a spirit, with a wish you have.

Sara, "We all know that some spirits--". We "all" know?
I don't!
I never met a spirit. Never saw one. Never heard one. Never had any contact with one.
Spirits may exist, to you! They certainly do not to me!

There is about seven high nature spirits.
They are not good or bad. They are not angels, but they are not demons. And they could hellp people i many cases.
