Casting Protective Wards

Should wards be designed strictly defensive or can/should they revert negative energy at the attacker? I design my wards in the shape of the pentacle and recharge them once a month. I was thinking, I usually trace the pentacle with sage smoke, should I do it with my wand instead? What are your opinions?

A ward is ment to protect and to deflect any thing that would do you harm magickly. To try any other way would be untrue and fake

This may help you some. I do my wards by first saying a protection chant or prayer to one of my personal deities to protect and watch over the house. Then lighting a sandlewood or dragon's blood incense in each room, I take the incense for each room and draw a pentagram at the windows and doors. I do this for every room. At the same time I visualize a protection bubble forming around the house covering each room as I go room to room. And for each window and door I state my intent for the ward. When I don't feel like using an incense for each room I use one to go room to room then when done I place the incense at he heart of the house.
To answer your question with my opinion it's best to keep the intent on protection of the home and those that live in it. This gives a wide variety of protection and nothing specific. If you want to include the intent of negative energy being reflected to the attacker then do so. Just don't make that your only intent. Not all negative energies come from an assailant. And when you draw the pentagram/pentacle, you can use the incense as a wand for casting the ward.

I was thinking about having my wards absorb energy from attacks then using that to recharge them.

Wouldn't that entile that when it absorbs the energy it will add negative energy to the ward which would defeat the purpose of the ward?
