hopefully this isn't the first time someone has reached out in this way, but I need to be put in contact with someone who knows a bit about magic or abilities or family witch gentry. My grandmother always called it 'the gift' and now i'm looking for answers.
is someone able to help me?
Witchcraft and Magick is a practice, it has nothing to do with your genetics or family history nor is it something that can be passed down. However, sometimes the word "gift" is used when a person has a special talent for example when it comes to divination. In my country, a person who is talented at divining or using tarot is usually referred as a person who has "the gift". However, keep in mind that even if you are talented in a specific practice, it does not mean that this is a trait passed down by genetics or your family; not really something that is carried in DNA like blue eyes or dark hair.

If you knew your grandmother growing up, chances are she already taught you. Being taught the ways actually has very little to do with magick but instead teaches how to live--a philosophy to every day life.
A big one in my family was "never think ill of someone especially out of anger or worry" as a way to be conscious and in control of one own thoughts, not letting emotions run them. Never say something you don't truly mean was another.
Then there was a lot of superstition and spirit etiquette--never say the name of the dead unless you want them near, never speak ill of the dead, never walk over a grave, etc.
But of course, culture matters. What I was taught isn't necessarily what others would be. Regardless, you should reflect on how you were raised and what you were taught. More than likely, you are already prepared by your family. Even if your grandmother's child (your parent) didn't practice, he/she likely unknowingly passed along the same philosophy because it was second nature.
