Integer = number, digit. Fraction = part of a number, part of a whole - 3/4 is a fraction. Decimal = a number with decimal units, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths etc. Numerator = the top number of a fraction - 3 is the numerator in the fraction 3/4. Denominator = the bottom number of a fraction - 4 is the denominator in the fraction 3/4. Order Of Operations = EPEMDAS...E everyone - exponents modifying parenthesis...P Please - parenthesis...E excuse - exponents inside parenthesis...M my - multiplication...D dear - division...A Aunt - addition...S Sally - subtraction. Exponent = a power to multiply a number, 2^2 = 2(2) = 4. Variable = a symbol, an unknown value. Y + 2 = 5. Y = 3. 3 + 2 = 5. Equation = a math statement that is balanced and equal - such as 2 + 5 = 7. Algebra = math and equations with variables, exponents, and fractions. Geometry = shapes, volumes, lengths, widths, heights, and diameters. Chemistry = chemicals and substances. Calculus = number tables. Addition = to combine, to increase. Subtraction = to lessen, to decrease. Multiplication = to increase by sets. Three sets of four units is twelve units. Division = to organize into sets. There are three sets of four units in twelve. Set = a group. Circumference = the distance around a circle. Length = long or short, the distance in length. Height = high or short, the distance in height. Width = wide or narrow, the distance in width. Area = length multiplied by width is the area of a square in two dimensions ; length and width. Volume = length multiplied by width and height is the volume of a square in three dimensions; length, width, and height. Is/Of = X/100...this formula is useful to determine matching values in algebra. 2/4 = X/100. The numerator of the first fraction diagonally multiplies the denominator the second fraction. Then the denominator of the first fraction diagonally multiplies the numerator of the second fraction. 200 = 4X. Divide both sides the equation by 4. 50 = X. Restate the equation using the new terms. 2/4 = 50/100. Essay = a collection of paragraphs with a thesis, introduction, development, and conclusion. Thesis = the main idea of an essay. Paragraph = a collection of sentences with a topic sentence and examples to explain and describe the main idea of the paragraph. Topic Sentence = the main idea of a paragraph. Who? Does What? To Whom? How? When? Where? Why? = questions to ask and to answer when reading and writing (who? what? when? where? why?). Fiction = imaginary, dream, hypothetical. Non Fiction = fact.
