Many things can be used as a planchette. It is effectively just a pointer as the person/people are typically the mediums. As long as it is large enough for one or more people to lay fingers onto it, and it is smooth (and light) enough to slide around easily without wobbling or falling over, then it will do the trick. Having it arrow-shaped or otherwise having some sort of defined point or eyelet to specify a target letter is helpful.
If you want to use a crystal/stone, I represent ones with connection to easily flowing energy, spirits, and associations with Oracle's, mediumship, and higher-level connections.
