Recurring dreams are not all that rare. I had one for many years myself.
Something to understand about dreams is that some of them are symbolic ways for your mind to deal with real-life issues. So instead of taking your dreams literally try thinking about what has been going on in your life. Then think about how that might relate to your dreams.
For instance, if you dream that you are trapped in a dark room and can't find you way out, it might be your brain trying to process the idea that in real life you are having difficulty figuring out how to move forward in your life.
