You can't, honestly. We can't even be sure that everything isn't imagined. The only thing in this world you can be sure exists is your own mind.

Spirits communicate through the imagination. Do you know what your imagination is? A creative visualisation, it is the ability to formulate an 'astral' image, a form. It is not necessarily mere daydreaming when it is trained. Spirits use this faculty when we perceive their forms and receive communication- everything is filtered through your own mind, some of it will be of them, some of it of you.

As mentioned above, everything is in the mind. Our entire sensory experience is generated in the mind- the brain processes the data and relays the experience to us. Sight is a great example- the only thing the physical apparatus can receive is lightwaves which reflect a 2-d image to the retina upside down! The brain turns it the right way around and creates a 3-d world.

To quote a favourite author of mine-

"It's all in your head, you just have no idea how big your head is!"- Lon Milo DuQuette.

Recently I thought a spirit was just in my head. I never saw it but felt it. After I noticed it, I had a strong sense that it knew I was aware of it. I brushed it off stupidly and realized in the next few days I felt fatigued terribly. Luckily a thread already clarified a similar story and I knew to cleanse myself and banish it.

It's a scary feeling. But I believe our imaginations are connected to dreams and those dreams are apart of the astral plane.
