Welcome to spells of magic, Cygnus. The first two articles I'd suggest reading are "Newbie Central" and "Som Survival Guide", both found under the featured articles in the articles tab. This won't teach you much about magic, but it will teach you about spells of magic as a community and as a website.
As your your endeavors, there are many experienced practitioners on this website who practice, or have practiced, or at very least know about altered states of consciousness. A higher state of consciousness is merely an altered state from the original state of consciousness. People have been practicing this for hundred, if not, thousands of years. The methods for altering your state of mind are vast and varied, and some are considered quite dangerous. Many tribal shamans or witches would do this by mixing herbs and ingredients together to make a salve. Because they had little scientific knowledge of these herbs and many ingredients, what some thought were visions or occult knowledge attained is only hallucinations caused by the toxins or chemicals in the salve.
I'd recommend using extreme caution in this field until it becomes something that you are comfortable and knowledgeable about because you can do more than mess up your body by altering your state, you can also permanently fry or burn your brain to a point where you will permanently see reality differently.
