Tarot choosing Aces

Hey everyone, I was just curious. I am always eager to learn new spreads when it comes to doing a reading, but something has struck my curiosity. I have seen at the beginning of some readings, readers place all of the aces (wand, coin, sword, and cup) in front of the person who they are about to read for, and they ask them to choose 1 ace. Why do they do that? What is the significance? Does it tell you anything about the person or a situation?
